A popular monthly event at momstown Guelph is our Junior Chef. It's an opportunity for our little chef's to try cooking, baking or preparing a snack to eat. Despite the usual mess that accompanies their venture, they have a great time and love to eat something that they helped to create.
This month we decided to try making Exotic Fruit Salads. Many of the children (and even the mom's) had never tried the fruits that we had chosen before, so it was a great opportunity to try out some new potential snacks.
Pineapple was the most 'normal' fruit we used, and since most of the children had tried it before, it's the one that we started out with (and was definitely one of the favourites over all). Our little chefs thought it was great that they were able to cut up their own fruit with plastic knives, and use their fingers to eat it!
There was lots of excitement to guess the colour of the insides of each fruit before cutting them open. As well as the pineapple, we had papaya, mango, pomegranate, star fruit and dragon fruit. The dragon fruit was the most surprising once we cut it open, no one guessed the colour right (even though one of our chefs was convinced it would be blue…)
By the end of the event, it was determined that pineapple, mango and pomegranate were by far the favourites. No one really liked the papaya. Many of our mom's will be heading to the grocery store for new snacks in the near future!
