As a Montessori teacher, I have a passion for hands-on learning, and believe that every child benefits from Montessori-based activities which focus on learning through the senses. So, the reason for this article is to give moms an opportunity to learn about, and to do some Montessori-inspired activities at home with their preschoolers. The momstown theme for the month of May is ‘Under the Sea’. So, have fun with these sea-markable, themed, do-it-yourself activities – Montessori style!

New research into child development demonstrates that parents and caregivers can play a critical role in ensuring their child’s individual success in all areas of development. In order for that to happen, we often need extra support, wisdom, and encouragement along the way, so that we can feel confident in our ability to give our child a healthy start and provide early intervention. This is why Dieticians of Canada and Alberta Health Care Services have created a free video series called ‘Raising Our Healthy Kids’.

Why Does My Child Not Like Reading? Strategies for Resistant Readers

December 15, 2014momstownParenting, Preschooler, School Life1 commentCurriculum, Editorial, Literacy, Parenting, Preschool

As parents, we are well aware of the benefits of reading. We remember our love for reading, and, it only makes sense that we want our children to share a love of books too. While a good many children do become excited and engaged in reading (especially in the primary grades), some are resistant, and, not to mention, truly disinterested. There are a number of things that parents and teachers can do to help engage reluctant readers.

This month for our Contes pour les bouts d’choux it was sponsored by Scholastic Canada and we read a hilarious book called La Vieille Dame Oui Avala Zig Zag. It was by the author Tedd Arnold who created the fly guy series.

It starts out with a young boy name Biz and his pet fly Zig Zag. He takes his pet fly with him everywhere even visiting his Grand-mere and by accident poor Grandmere swallows Zig Zag the fly.

It gives a twist to the song there was an old woman who swallowed a fly.

This months Tales for Tots was sponsored by Scholastic and we read a wonderful book just in time for fathers day. It was called Mighty Dads by Joan Holub. If you do not know that name you should, she is the writer behind the Pete the Cat books. I was very excited to see if Mighty Dads would be just as good and it was. The story was all about construction machine dads and their kids.
It had beautifully, coloured illustrations by James Dean.

This story is about two super cute little mice and one brother has to be very quiet since his little brother is napping and no one wants to wake a sleeping baby. The mouse has to find ways to entertain himself while being quiet which turns out to be quite difficult when all he wants to do is bang pots, build towers, paint his brother and more.
