Ideas for Hosting a Mother’s Day Tea Party

April 2, 2014momstownFamily LifeNo comments
Mother’s Day is a special time to celebrate moms and their relationship with their kids! Creating a Mother’s Day tea was the perfect way to honour moms, make lasting memories, create a special craft and enjoy some quality time with momstown friends.

Here are some of the activities we did at the momstown Guelph Mother's Day Tea Party and some tips so that you can use to host your own event!

Supplies:

variety of tea (our wonderful sponsor was David's Tea and they brought in several teas for us to try;  organic mother's little helper, mama mia! and cream of earl grey organic).

tea pot

tea cups (plastic or get the kids to decorate paper cups with stickers or crayons for mom)

sandwich ingredients and cookies (see below for a great recipe!)

plates and napkins

paint in spring colours

green construction paper

glue

decorations

Ideas and Activities:

Songs:

We sang some Mother's Day songs after we had our lunch.  Grab a kleenex and try these songs with your little ones.  Guaranteed to warm mom's heart on her special day.

I love mother (sung to Frere Jacques)

I love mother, I love mother,
Yes I do, yes I do
All I want to say is
Happy Mother's Day
I Love you, I love you.

Mommy Takes Good Care Of Me (sung to "Mary had a little lamb")
Mommy takes good care of me,
Care of me, care of me,
Mommy takes good care of me,
Because she loves me so.

Crafts:

The kids loved to paint their hands and create a handprint flower for their mommies.  What's better as a special gift for Mother's Day?

Steps:

1.  Paint your child's hand in a spring colour.

2.  Place their hand at the top of a drawn green stem or use green construction paper to glue one on the paper.

3. Add a special poem like these for mom or grandma;

I miss you
When we're not together.
I'm growing up so fast
See how big I've gotten
since you saw me last?
As I grow, I'll change a lot,
The years will fly right by.
You'll wonder how I grew so quick
when and where and why?
So save this card in a safe place,
And take it out each year.
The memories will come back of me,
When I was small and dear.

Love to you Grandma
Love to you Grandma on Mother's Day,
May lots of happiness come your way.
I love you Grandma with all my heart,
I loved you from the very start.
At Grandma's house I love to stay,
She always lets me have my way.
I sit and listen about her youth,
I bet dear Grandma, you were real cute.
So – today, have lots of fun,
From the very start, till the day is done.

Food:

You can give mom a break from cooking and buy pre-made sandwiches or get in the kitchen together with the kids to create the food for the event.  We have tea sandwich recipes and recipes for delicious homemade flower-shaped lemon sugar cookies.

Tips:  You can create a tea sandwich "bar" with all the ingredients and get moms and kids to make the tea sandwiches together!  Be sure to try some new techniques like rolling pinwheels, layering bread and cutting off crusts for traditional tea sandwiches!

Tips:  Older kids might like to bake with mom and create a craft while they are in the oven.
